José Herrero Rama is a stage director and writer. He holds a degree in Stage Direction and Dramaturgy from Madrid’s Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático, specialising in directing. He previously trained in text-based acting at the Escuela de Teatro de Getxo and in contemporary dance at Eguzki Zubia’s school in Bizkaia. His training brings together language, movement and the construction of a stage production.[1]
With actor Marjo Nina Ikonen he founded Ilmatar Teatro, a company devoted to exchange between Finnish and Spanish theatre. His directing work includes Jussi Kylätasku’s El pantano, Mika Myllyaho’s Pánico and Mika Waltari’s ¡Gabriel, regresa! These choices reveal a sustained engagement with relationships between characters and with the movement of plays between languages and audiences.[11][4][12][9]
In 2012 he directed Sofi Oksanen’s Purga, co-produced by Ilmatar and Vaivén. The production opened at the Teatro Principal in San Sebastián with a cast including Marjo Ikonen, Ana Pimenta and Sandra Ferrús. Violence, power and the survival of two generations of women lie at the centre of the play, whose Spanish run is documented in press reports and the performers’ credits.[2][3]
Lorca appears in his career long before virtual reality. He directed Mariana Pineda and Amor de don Perlimplín y Belisa en su jardín, the latter with Ilmatar and performances in Finland and Spain. In La habitación de Lorca, that relationship takes the form of a script for an immersive experience, where writing meets a visual and sonic realisation that places the visitor inside the work’s space.[6][5][10]
He has also written about his craft. ADE Teatro published his notes on staging Pánico in 2009 and El secreto de la crueldad: «Purga» de Sofi Oksanen in 2012. These texts offer a view of his work through its processes: reading a play, making directorial choices and working within the practical conditions of a company.[7][8]
